The new Toyota 4Runner Hybrid, badged i-FORCE MAX, is a body-on-frame midsize SUV that pairs a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with an electric motor for 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, the most of any 4Runner. It is a self-charging hybrid with 4x4, an eight-speed automatic and a tow rating of up to 6,000 pounds, offered on upper grades and standard on the Trailhunter and TRD Pro. If you want the strongest 4Runner for trails and towing, this is it.
Manhattan Beach Toyota is the South Bay's home for Toyota trucks, SUVs and hybrids, with a team that handles sales, financing, hybrid-certified service and Genuine Toyota parts and TRD accessories. Call or contact us today to find your 4Runner i-FORCE MAX.
i-FORCE MAX is Toyota's hybrid truck powertrain. In the 4Runner, an electric motor sits between the turbocharged 2.4-liter engine and the eight-speed automatic, adding instant torque from a standstill and filling in while the turbo builds boost. The battery recharges through regenerative braking and the engine, so you never plug in. On a loose, steep climb, that immediate torque is exactly what you want.
The i-FORCE MAX is offered on the upper half of the lineup:
Grade availability can shift between model years, so confirm the powertrain and grade on the listing. The window sticker will state i-FORCE MAX.
The gas 4Runner is available on more grades, offers two-wheel drive and an available third row, and has a lower starting point. The hybrid delivers roughly 50 more horsepower and nearly 150 more lb-ft of torque, which you feel on freeway on-ramps and on rocky grades. Both share the same frame, cabin, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite and 6,000-pound maximum tow rating. Choose based on how much you value that extra torque.
The Land Cruiser uses the same i-FORCE MAX powertrain and the same platform, but it comes with full-time 4WD standard, a boxier retro design and a more premium interior. The 4Runner Hybrid offers more grade choices, including the extreme Trailhunter and TRD Pro, and a sportier look. If you want a classic, understated off-roader, see the Land Cruiser. If you want the most aggressive off-road hardware, stay with the 4Runner.
