This marks the second time the Toyota brand has won this award and it comes after the Toyota Camry Hybrid won previously in 2007. Keep reading to find out what helped the Corolla earn the Green Car of the Year® award.
How Efficient Are the 2020 Corolla and Corolla Hybrid?
Thanks to the Toyota New Global Architecture platform, turning the Corolla into a hybrid model was easy. Beneath the hood of the 2020 Corolla Hybrid is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine along with two motor/generators. With the new platform, no space is lost in the cabin of the Corolla Hybrid. This hybrid Toyota model generates a combined output of 121 horsepower and earns drivers an EPA-estimated 53 city MPG on the road and remains the most affordable hybrid model in the Toyota brand lineup.
The gas-powered Corolla is also powered by a 1.8-liter engine, which is the same power source found in the previous Corolla generation. The 2020 model, however, amplifies the horsepower and improves efficiency on the road to make for an even better experience for drivers. Top Corolla trim levels are equipped with a new 2.0-liter Dynamic-Force direct-injection engine that is designed to deliver an increased performance on less fuel, taking its efficiency even further.
