AYSO: A Quality Goal

On Jan. 19, Darrell Sperber, General Manager, (right), presents Bill Fahey, Commissioner, American Soccer Youth Organization, Region 18, a novelty check with the donation amount of $5,000 in support of the organization's plan to install synthetic turf on the field at Marine Avenue Park in Manhattan Beach.

Sportsmanship and development. These are just two of the many qualities the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) imparts upon the children ages 4 to 19 to whom it provides an alliance of coaches, players and volunteers for soccer games, practice and training.

Longevity and strength. These are two qualities that can be used in reference to the fields on which AYSO members play. To buoy the organization's overall goals for its members, it has actively sought to improve the grass-bare field at Marine Avenue Park in Manhattan Beach by raising money to assist paying for a synthetic turf and the associated engineering costs.

AYSO believes a synthetic turf will increase the safety of the field and require less maintenance, therefore, becoming more economical for athletes.

In October, Manhattan Beach Toyota produced the Halloween Haunted House to raise funds for AYSO's goal of replacing the field's surface. Visitors' contributions to the Halloween Haunted House raised $2,500 for AYSO and Toyota Motor Sales matched that amount for a total of $5,000.

AYSO received the donation from Manhattan Beach Toyota on Nov. 9. With the money AYSO is raising, it plans to also install new lighting on the field at Marine Avenue Park.
